Lilium Candidum

In pre-Christian times, it was associated with Hera (Juno), who, according to legend, suckled the baby Hercules. While she did this, a gush of milk spurted out, which arched through the sky to form the Milk Way. Wherever it fell in drops on the earth, the shining white lily grew. This flower, with its exquisitely beautiful flower shape and restrained colour, came to symbolise the purity for which the Mother of God was famed.
